Brattleboro Nurses in Nicaragua – 2
We are tired and happy. On day three of our lactation course at hospital HEODRA. Conditions are very basic in the hospital. All services and medicines here are free and as such the hospital serves the poorest of the poor with limited equipment and resources. The doctors and nurses in our class are attentive and eager to participate. We are having a wonderful time with our Nicaraguan colleagues even as we struggle at times with our Spanish. We are teaching in the med school attached to the hospital and it is amazing to see how they make do. No one seems to have their own textbooks or materials. They all share or check out books from the library and photocopy a few pages at a time. Dr. Nassau gave me a large bag of pulse oximeter probes before I left and they are thrilled with these as they are reused patient to patient until they are shredded.
We thought we might have more time to explore Leon but between time in the hospital, time teaching and then preparing for the next day’s course we are barely sneaking in time for meals.
