BMH TO HOST FREE WRITING WORKSHOP FOR INDIVIDUALS TOUCHED BY CANCER

Brattleboro Memorial Hospitalšs Oncology Department and Forest Moon are partnering again to offer Spirit of the Written Word, a ten-week writing workshop for Brattleboro area residents affected by a cancer diagnosis. The free workshop will take place on Tuesday evenings, March 4 - May 6, 2008, 6:00pm to 8:00pm at BMH in Tyler Conference Room on the main level of the hospital. No writing experience is required and all sharing is confidential.

The workshop will be facilitated by Forest Moon’s program director Pam Roberts. Roberts is a writer, artist and energy healer who found writing to be an important part of her healing process when she was diagnosed with breast cancer twelve years ago. She believes deeply in the transformative and healing power of writing within the safe and supportive workshop environment and leads several workshops in Massachusetts.

More than 500 individuals in Windham County are treated annually for cancer at the BMH Oncology Department. Forest Moon, a Whitingham nonprofit organization founded by a local cancer survivor, provides support programs to the cancer community, and has served 150 individuals since beginning offerings in January 2006. The writing workshop is made available to participants thanks to a generous grant from The Vermont/New Hampshire Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

The purpose of Spirit of the Written Word is to promote emotional and spiritual healing in individuals who are touched by cancer, including survivors, family members, friends, and caregivers. A former writing workshop participant wrote that the most valuable part of the experience was, “Being able to write each week about my feelings having cancer. It’s easier for me to write and read than to speak those feelings.”

Spirit of the Written Word is limited to 12 participants; registration is required. To register, or for more information, contact Pam Roberts at 413-625-2402 or pam@forestmoon.org.
