| “The
Attitude at BMH Made All the Difference to Me”
– John’s Story
John K, 55, of West Chesterfield, NH, became a patient
at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital about three years ago.
After a lifetime of good health with little call for
medical care, he was suddenly confronted with a cancer
diagnosis and needed immediate surgery.
“I wasn’t really sure what to expect,
but the doctors and other staff at BMH gave me confidence
and, after getting a second opinion, I placed myself
in their hands. It’s a decision I have never regretted.”
For his surgery and recovery, John spent about a week
at BMH. The overall experience was a very positive one
for him, as he got to see firsthand the flexibility
and personal attention that a first-rate community hospital
can offer.
“I was impressed at just how good a hospital
BMH really is. And not just in terms of doctors, facilities
and equipment. Staff clearly saw my care through my
eyes, and did everything they could to facilitate my
healing. They got me in quickly, accommodated my needs,
watched over me with care and let me focus on my recovery.
I came out of the surgery in great shape…I knew
I was going to be okay.”
John said the experience was also a positive one for
family members and friends who visited him while he
was in the hospital.
“It wasn’t like going to a big city hospital;
BMH made it easy for them. I didn’t have to feel
like my wife and other visitors were being put out to
come see me. And their support also made a world of
difference to me.”
He followed up his surgery with about six months of
outpatient treatment in the Oncology unit at BMH.
“My course of chemotherapy further increased
my confidence in and respect for BMH. I just knew I
was in the best of hands. Everyone involved clearly
knew what they were doing, connected with me personally
and, again, made it as easy for me as possible.”
John noted that he’s heard from friends about
their treatment in bigger-name hospitals and called
his experience at Brattleboro Memorial “far superior.”
“I think attitude plays a critical role in health
and healing, and in every way the people at BMH helped
keep me strong. They gave me exactly the support I needed
at a critical time in my life. Now I support them because
I believe in them. Plus, I owe them my life. And I wouldn’t
hesitate to trust them with it again.”
