INVESTING IN BRATTLEBORO MEMORIAL HOSPITAL

Ways of Supporting BMH

Outright Gifts: Outright gifts are gifts that are given in the present time.
Whether cash, check, or stock, their value is transferred in the present.

Annual Fund: Annual Fund is the foundation of our development efforts. It is the yearly giving that supports the day-to-day work of BMH. These gifts help to provide the hospital with new technology and equipment, and assist in upgrading existing facilities. These gifts can be made in honor, memory, or celebration of someone.

Commemorative Gifts: Commemorative gifts are an excellent way to celebrate life, to recognize those whose kindness has touched you, or honor/memorialize a special person in your life. Whether it is a birthday, anniversary, holiday, or you are struggling with how to express your sorrow and want to honor a passing life, these gifts are a wonderful way to share.

The Development Office will send an acknowledgement of each commemorative gift to the person or family in whose name the gift is made. Donors will also receive acknowledgement with the amount of their gift for tax purposes.

“Two months before our big 50th anniversary celebration, Bill was rushed to the Emergency Room at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital where the staff and doctors responded immediately. His care in the ER, surgery, and intensive care was outstanding. At our 50th anniversary party, we specified “no gifts.” However, the gift that we most appreciated was a donation to BMH given in our honor and in celebration of our anniversary. How appropriate, since we truly felt that BMH had given us the gift of life.”

Matching Gifts: Many companies match employees’ and retirees’ charitable gifts. Donors need to check with their company and fill out the necessary paperwork. This is a wonderful way to increase your charitable support for BMH.

Stock Transfer: For many reasons, a primary one being tax advantages, individuals choose to make their charitable gifts with stock. When making a stock gift, please make sure to notify the Director of Development, Ellen Smith at 802-257-8314. Unless you notify Ellen, we will not know the name of the generous supporter and will be unable to recognize their generosity. Planned Gifts: Planned giving is legacy giving. It is a meaningful way to give back – to leave a philanthropic legacy to your community and to Brattleboro Memorial Hospital. Unlike other types of philanthropy, these are gifts that are constructed now but benefit BMH at some future date. CLICK here to link to The 1904 Legacy Society page.

The planned gifts of the past have created our strength today and your gift of tomorrow will do the same for future generations.

Charitable Remainder Trust: Enables you to place cash, securities, or real estate into a trust that pays lifetime income to you and/or other beneficiaries with the principal eventually passing to Brattleboro Memorial Hospital.

Charitable Gift Annuities: Allows a donor to make a gift of cash or appreciated securities to BMH which guarantees a payment to the donor and/or beneficiary of a specific amount on a quarterly basis for life.

Charitable Lead Trusts: Enables a donor to place cash, securities, or real estate into a trust that pays BMH a percentage for a term of years with the principal passing to heirs. The term of the trust is fixed, usually between 10 to 20 years.

Charitable Bequests: Allows the donor to make a gift to BMH through their will. These can be done in one of three ways; as a specific bequest (a set amount), as a percentage of the estate, or as a residuary.

Deferred Gift Annuities/Beneficiary on Account/Retained Life Estates: Are other planned giving methods that might be an appropriate way for you to make a legacy gift to BMH. Please contact the Development Office at 802-257-8314.

Endowments: Endowments are established in perpetuity for a specific purpose stated by the donor. This type of gift joins the vision of the donor with needs and objectives of BMH. Endowed funds are reliable, generating an annual income while the principal remains secure. Endowments can be established though a testamentary bequest, trust agreement, or an outright planned gift.
