Local Pediatrician Honored for Immunization Work

The American Academy of Pediatrics acknowledged Dr. Valerie Rooney with a special achievement award for her commitment to increasing immunization rates and improving the health of children. Dr Rooney is a BMH pediatrician working at Just So Pediatrics and Cornerstone Pediatrics.

The AAP selects its national award recipients based on comparative evaluations of data collected by each state. Rooney’s award was given in recognition of her work with the Vermont Department of Health advisory committee on immunization, where her duties included traveling to medical offices across Vermont to advocate for immunization awareness and consult with practices on ways they can improve local patient participation in immunization programs.

Rooney has also consulted with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Vermont on immunization issues. The two practices with which she is affiliated, Cornerstone Pediatrics of Bellows Falls and Just So Pediatrics of Brattleboro, have both been recognized for excellent patient immunization rates.

Previously, the AAP had given Rooney a national award for distinguished work on children’s issues and health care policy. She received her medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and completed her residency at Tufts Floating Hospital in Boston. She is an adjunct Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Dartmouth Medical School, adjunct faculty at The University of Vermont Medical School, and serves on the Executive Board of the Vermont Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Rooney’s special interests include school evaluations, allergies, asthma and behavioral pediatrics, as well as general and adolescent pediatrics.

Cornerstone Pediatrics is located at 22 Bridge Street in Bellows Falls and can be reached by calling 802-463-2020. Just So Pediatrics is located at 16 Belmont Avenue in Brattleboro and can be reached at 802-254-2253. Both practices are members of the BMH Physician Group.
