Four Seasons Midwifery – for all the seasons of a woman’s life…

Complete and comprehensive midwifery services are now available to women in the greater Brattleboro area through the new Four Seasons Midwifery practice. Offered at Brattleboro Obstetrics & Gynecology and affiliated with Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, Four Seasons Midwifery will provide personalized care for mothers and families in this, the area’s first comprehensive nurse midwifery service.

The word ‘midwife’ literally means with woman, and midwives have been ‘with women’ during their childbearing years throughout human history.

Four Seasons Midwifery is comprised of three highly-trained midwives, each offering skills developed from advanced training, and licensure in nursing and obstetrics and gynecology. Our three midwives provide personal attention and support throughout the maternity cycle, which includes 24/7 coverage for labor. This means that one of the three participating midwives will be available for the birth of your child. Four Seasons Midwifery is the only round-the-clock nurse midwifery service in the area.

Our association with the Brattleboro OB/GYN practice allows teamwork with Judith McBean, MD, and James Bunker, MD, the experienced obstetricians and gynecologists in the practice, who provide 24-hour back-up for the midwives.

Four Seasons Midwifery staff affirms birth as a normal process and advocate a family-centered birth in the safety of the beautiful BMH Birthing Center hospital setting. Selecting a midwifery service can mean choices… choices such as water births, HypnoBirthing®, Conscious Birthing Preparation, doulas (birth attendants), and a range of options for pain management including epidurals.

Four Seasons Midwifery provides networking referrals for massage, acupuncture, and trained doula services for birth support in our community. But the care doesn’t stop with the pregnant mom. Our service also offers PAP smears, annual exams, and family planning. Four Seasons Midwifery provides healthcare for all seasons of a woman’s life.

So, who are the three midwives who make up Four Seasons Midwifery? Following is a short description of some of their qualifications. Read on, but remember, the best way to truly get the pulse of this new service would be for you to plan to meet them in person.

Lois Trezise, BA, RN, CNM, MSN, studied midwifery at the University of Besançon in France, after which she received a master of science degree in nursing from Stony Brook (NY) University School of Nursing. Lois has practiced midwifery for 30 years, and has been on staff at Brattleboro OB/GYN since 2001. She is certified to teach HypnoBirthing® and is certified in hypnosis by the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis.

Raine Kane, BA, RN, CNM, MSN, studied midwifery at Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. She received her bachelor of arts degree at Empire State College in Saratoga Springs, New York, after which she received her master of science degree in nursing at Stony Brook (NY) University School of Nursing. Raine has practiced women’s healthcare since 1980, and has been on staff at Brattleboro OB/GYN since 2003. She is certified to teach HypnoBirthing®.

Meghan Arthur, BS, RN, CNM, WHNP, MS, studied at the Ohio State University in Columbus, receiving certifications in nursing, midwifery, and as a Women's Health Nurse Practitioner. Following this, she completed a fellowship at Holy Family Birth Center in Weslaco, Texas. Prior to midwifery, Meghan received an undergraduate degree in chemistry from Grinnell College in Iowa. Meghan is the newest member of the Brattleboro OB / GYN team. Her area of special interest is “Centering Pregnancy” which offers selected group prenatal care and permits women to build connections with other women during their pregnancies.

All three nurse midwives associated with Four Seasons Midwifery are certified by the American College of Nurse Midwives.

Nurse midwives Lois, Raine, and Meghan are excited to be able to offer local women the full spectrum of personalized care and attention on a round-the-clock basis. They look forward to providing the mother with individualized education, counseling, prenatal care, continuous hands-on assistance during labor and delivery, and postpartum support, all from the area’s first comprehensive midwifery service: Four Seasons Midwifery.

TESTIMONIALS

The committed support, constant care and loving shoulder of the whole Brattleboro OB/GYN family helped me have a happy and wonderful delivery.
Merry Belval

The staff at Brattleboro OB/GYN and BMH made the birth of our first son the most amazing experience we could have asked for. The staff was all so supportive of our request to have as natural a birth as possible and to use HypnoBirthing® techniques. I’m so glad that we chose this team of professionals, it made all the difference.
Cate and Chris Caserta

Giving birth in a hospital with midwives in attendance offered me the best of both worlds; it was like having a home birth where I was given the time and space to follow my own body’s lead, while having the support of modern medicine there when and if needed. I feel blessed to have given birth to my baby in such a deeply supportive environment, and wish every laboring woman could receive the same loving, professional, intuitive care that I received.
