Jonathan Thatcher, MD, was recently certified by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration to perform the Oxford Partial Knee replacement surgery. Thatcher says the implant enables surgeons to remove only the arthritic side and preserve all normal cartilage and ligaments. Replacing only one of the three compartments in the knee provides several benefits to the patients including the need for less pain medication and a faster recovery time.

“When the procedure is done well, it’s just as durable as a total knee replacement. But since the patient still has two-thirds of the original knee, he or she feels the knee is more normal and the recovery is a lot easier,” says Thatcher. “You can return to playing tennis, skiing; anything you want.”
