The certified diabetes educator for the BMH Diabetes Education & Counseling program is Houghton Smith, RN, CDE (pictured in photo).Houghton (Hoty) was born and grew up in Brattleboro. He received his Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree in 1980 from the University of Vermont. He worked in the Boston area as a nurse, including in cardiac care, and later as a visiting nurse.
When Hoty first moved to Brattleboro in 1988, he was a visiting nurse with the Southern Vermont Home Health Agency, which became associated with the Visiting Nurse Agency of Vermont and New Hampshire where he worked until 2005.
Hoty was credentialed as a Certified Diabetic Educator in 1996, and in 2005, came to work at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, having helped start the BMH Diabetes Clinic in 2000, after a needs assessment revealed its importance to the community.
Hoty and his wife live in the Brattleboro area with their daughter. He likes to hike, bike, and work in the garden.
