The Vermont Department of Health has authorized the Brattleboro Memorial Hospital Travel Clinic to purchase and administer the yellow fever vaccine, hospital officials announced today.
BMH made the request for authorization as part of their efforts to provide immunizations and travel-related health advice through their travel clinic, formed earlier this year as part of the hospital’s Occupational Health Services department. They will now be listed as an authorized U.S. yellow fever vaccine center on the Center for Disease Control Travel web site.
“Authorization to administer the yellow fever vaccine is another step in assuring continuity of care for former clients of the World Learning clinic and others in the Brattleboro area planning a trip abroad,” says E.J. Roberts, a registered nurse in the BMH Travel Clinic.
Yellow fever is a virus transmitted to humans through mosquito bites. Proof of yellow fever vaccination is required for travel to and from certain countries by international regulation, and the CDC advises all American citizens to get vaccinated prior to traveling to areas of the world where the virus is found.
Roberts says the BMH Travel Clinic recommends contacting them 4 to 6 weeks prior to departure for vaccinations and guidance on safe foods to eat and drink, insect bite prevention and other travel safety tips. The clinic’s phone number is 802-257-8235.
The BMH Travel Clinic is located on the third floor of the Dunham Building across from the hospital’s main entrance. It is staffed by Roberts and Jean Bristol, a registered nurse with 20 years of experience in travel medicine and a member of the International Society of Travel Medicine. The clinic’s medical advisor is Dr. George Idelkope.
BMH’s Occupational Health Services department provides resources to area businesses that create a safer workplace environment and improve overall employee health, including pre-placement and annual physicals, drug screening, flu clinics, ergonomic evaluations, and on-site testing of hearing, vision and blood pressure. The Occupational Health Services department is open Monday through Friday from 7:00 am to 4:00 pm. Appointments can be made by calling 802-257-8235.
