May 26, 2017 (Brattleboro, VT) – Brattleboro Memorial Hospital (BMH) recently hosted the annual Medical Staff Recognition event at the Brattleboro Museum and Art Center.  The event honored providers for their contributions to the hospital and dedication to patient care; guests included both BMH medical staff and leadership, as well as family and friends.

“Our medical staff provides exceptional care each day of the year,” noted Patty O’Donnell, Chairwoman of the BMH Board of Directors.  “This event is our way of taking the time to thank them for their dedication to our community and to recognize their work.”

The event included recognition of retiring providers, including Robert Backus, MD, Richard Fletcher, APRN, Linda Rice, APRN, and Robert Tortolani, MD.  Co-hosts Drs. Rooney and McGraw also welcomed new medical staff who joined BMH in the past year.  Three special annual awards were announced during the event.

The Enunciation Emmy Award recognizes a provider who delivers accurate, timely transcripts with excellent articulation and provides support staff assistance in spelling new drugs, procedures, and unusual names.  The awardee of the Enunciation Emmy was Phaedra McDonough, APRN, a nurse practitioner for the BMH Center for Cardiovascular Health.

The ED Consultant Award recognizes clinicians for outstanding communication, responsiveness, patient advocacy, and enthusiastic collaboration with Emergency Department staff. The awardees of the ED Consultant Award were Elizabeth McLarney, MD, a physician for Brattleboro Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine and Aida Avdic, Medical Director of the BMH Hospitalist program.

The Robert “Bob” Tortolani, MD Distinguished Physician Award recognizes honors a physician who has demonstrated exceptional dedication to Brattleboro Memorial Hospital and the community. The physician is known for his or her compassionate and exemplary care of patients and has fostered an atmosphere of collegiality and is held in high esteem by the Medical Staff..  The awardee was Martina Szcensy, MD.

Valerie Rooney, MD, chair of the BMH Medical Staff and pediatrician at Just So Pediatrics, co-hosted the event with Kathleen McGraw, MD, BMH Chief Medical Officer.  “We are so thankful these providers have chosen to build their careers at BMH and contribute to the local community,” reflected Rooney.
