The purpose behind National Blood Donor Month is to honor voluntary blood donors and to encourage more people to give blood during a time of year (January) that is often marked by shortages of donated blood.

Human blood is an essential medicine, and there’s no substitute for it. Consider these facts:

  • Someone in the U.S. needs blood every two seconds.
  • More than 29,000 units of red blood cells are used in the U.S. every day.
  • One in 7 hospital patients needs donated blood.
  • If one percent more Americans were to donate blood, we would eliminate blood shortages!
